About JV’s Spring Connect

JV stands for John Vogel, the founder and inventor of the Spring Connect.

John Vogel – Founder

John is a native Floridian who grew up in Gibsonton, just steps from Tampa Bay. His earliest memories are of fishing the bay waters by his home, where he’d wander off as young as 5 years old, forgetting to tell anyone where he was going. It didn’t take long for his mom and dad to catch on. Johnny was in the bay!

At age fourteen, he entered the Tampa Tarpon Tournament, jr. division, and caught two fish, each weighing 73 lbs. He used a Mitchell 303 spinning reel with 20 lb test line and an 8 ft rod.

John had a long career as a tomato and cattle farmer on his family farm, V.V. Vogel and Sons, and farming remains a passion of his, but he is a fisherman at heart.

In 1976, he initiated the Hillsborough Tarpon Tournament and served as the first president. The first day, he caught a 129 lb fish. He was also on the board of directors for the Alafia River catfish tournament, which catered to children and adults. It was the largest one-day tournament in the southeast and he served as weigh-master for several years.
